The wickedness of man’s pride, and the idolatry of patriotism
Good morning to you.
At this point you may be wondering, “what does pride and patriotism have to do with the topics of Christianity & religion?” Regrettably, plenty.
“Pride” is a major sin that’s warned against throughout the bible. And like a twisted vine, “pride” & “patriotism” are commonly embedded into religion, (which disfigure the face of genuine Christianity).
So what do you think is the most vile of all of man’s sins?
Is it murder? Genocide? Abortion? Child abuse? Sexual perversion? Torturing people? Stealing? No. The most vile of all sins is pride.
Pride is what got Lucifer kicked out of heaven, and it’s the same sin that ultimately causes people to go to hell. Pride is what causes someone to turn up their nose to God’s precious only begotten Son. Pride is what makes a person see themselves as a “basically not so bad person.” And in so doing, they arrogantly spit on the shed-blood of God’s only begotten Son.
So now allow me to show you in scripture please where pride is ranked as the first sin among the seven abominations unto God.
16 “These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.”
And here’s a practical example of what that sin looks like in everyday life:
Have you ever watched TV? Or listened to people talk in general? What do you always hear them doing? You hear them incessantly bragging on themselves or someone else don’t you?
Exactly as God describes in Proverbs 20.6:
“Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?”
Conversely, how often do you hear someone say something like this:
“Don’t brag on me, because I deserve to be thrown into hell. Let’s brag on the risen Lord Jesus Christ instead of me.”
(You probably haven’t heard people say that a whole lot have you)?
And to add to that, every election cycle we’re put through yet another disgusting experience of sinful people promoting other sinful people to lead us around, (as if they’re the answer to our problems).
God tells us about this disgusting sin in the bible doesn’t He?
1 Samuel 8.4-8
4 “Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,
5 And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.
6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD.
7 And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.
8 According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.”
Sure, we Christians are to lead quiet, peaceable lives. Which of course includes complying with the laws of the land where we don’t violate God’s direction in our spirit.
But God never suggested that we are to find our answers in government.
In fact, God’s word gives us clear warnings in scripture that clearly teaches us that we should never look to man, (which would include secular government & the military) as a person’s trust.
“Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD.”
Pride is disgusting in all forms, and that’s no more evident than when sinful people use God as a prop to exalt their self.
Let me give you an example of what I’m talking about please.
Consider the familiar motto: “in God we trust.” You should know that that’s not referencing the genuine God of the bible. How do I know that? It’s because the Lord Jesus Christ is intentionally omitted in that phrase so to accommodate everyone’s religion. Which means that that motto is nothing more than a meaningless prop that sinful people use to make themselves seem honorable. In other words, it’s nothing more than a device of man’s wicked pride.
How can I scripturally prove that that motto isn’t referencing the genuine God of the bible?
Easy. Because if someone doesn’t have the Lord Jesus Christ, if they omit Him, they don’t have God at all.
That one-size-fits-all “God” that’s associated with patriotism is nothing more than the figment of sinful man’s imagination, a refuge of lies.
1 John 2.22-23
22 “Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
23 Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: but he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.”
That same prideful, antichrist wickedness of patriotism is also found in pledging “allegiance” to anything that isn’t the risen Lord Jesus Christ.
We have a perfect example from scripture of how God’s people are to refuse to pledge “allegiance” to any flag or secular government.
Read Daniel 3.16-18 please:
16 “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter.
17 If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king.
18 But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.”
Likewise, what about the sin of the military in general? (I’m not talking about whether or not Christians are in the military, certainly there are). I’m talking about the wicked sin of pride that the military generates in abundance. Did you ever think about the military as being a sin factory? I say that because “pride” is the prevailing & defining characteristic of the military. It’s a cauldron of Satanic pride which exalts man.
And you can toss in all of the religious & celebrity garbage that impresses and exalts man as well.
Everything which exalts man is antichrist, and is an abomination to God.
my duty is not to appease sinful man’s errant sensibilities, my duty is to be true to the risen Lord Jesus Christ only.
It doesn’t matter what you or I think about anything. The only thing that matters is what God has said.
The fact is, God isn’t impressed with the dung that impresses sinful man. His ways are higher than our ways.
So here’s some closing words that God has said about man’s wicked pride:
“And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.”
“Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished.”
So I thank you for sharing some of your valuable time with me, and as always…
All glory to the risen Lord Jesus Christ, and no glory to us whatsoever.
